About Jack Vettriano

Jack Vettriano was born in Fife, Scotland in 1951. He left school at the age of 16 to begin a career in as an engineer in the Scottish coal fields. With no formal art school training he began painting in his spare time at the comparatively late age of 21. Originally painting under his birth name of Jack Hoggan, he later adopted the name Vettriano; a variant on the surname of his grandfather Signor Vettraino.

Vettriano's breakthrough into the art world came in his mid thirties, when in 1988, he had two paintings accepted by the Royal Scottish Academy for its summer show. Both sold on the first day. The following summer Vettriano had success at the Royal Academy in London.

Vettriano's paintings have the ability to make you feel nostalgic for a time and mood that although never experienced have become familiar through cinema. The creates a world of edgy romance where the men are tougher and the women more unavailable. Each picture seems to be an episode in a drama, played out in a glamorous Hollywood of the past. Although the vibrancy of the colour is one never seen in the films of the town's heydey.

Over the years interest in Jack Vettriano's original paintings and his limited edition prints has reached a level of commercial success that any artist would envy and he has become one of the most successful artists of the modern era. In 2004, The Singing Butler, sold at auction for £744,800, the world record for a Scottish painting. Vettriano has also received personal recognition with an OBE for his work charitable work and services to the art world. He has also received an honorary degree from the University of St Andrews.

His paintings of iconic images are found worldwide, with his original paintings being highly sought after and many of his limited edition prints sold out. With a style compared to Hopper and Sikert, Vettriano has moved to the forefront of contemporary art. His popularity is due not only to his technical skills but to the rare gifts of humour and realism.
